McConnell Youth Literature Conference

The McConnell Youth Literature Conference In Celebration of Anne McConnell was a wonderful experience yet again! I love meeting new people and learning more about some of my favorite authors and illustrators. When I return to work I always return with stories to share about the hows and whys of certain titles. This year presentations were given by Susan Campbell Bartoletti, Loren Long, and Cari Best to name a few. On Sunday I attended the 2007 May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture presented by Kevin Henkes. The lecture was great...it did make me miss my "home". :)

Is this really the end?

I did it! I have done all 23 Things! Yet, I am still not sure why I only have 20 posts??? I will go back and make sure I "blogged" about each thing. So this may not be the end. :) My favorite discoveries were "Library Thing" and "ZoHo". By participating in this discovery program I feel motivated to keep learning and playing with my computer to take advantage of all those "things" out there on the web. During my learning experienced I was surprised by how much I was already familiar with but had not "played" with to know how to use them to my advantage. I would certainly participate in another discovery program like this in the future.

McCracken County's Netlibrary

I explored McCracken County Public Library's Netlibrary collection because this is the one I need to know. As of today we currently have 1316 titles in our Netlibrary collection. All of these appear to be titles geared more our adult patrons. (with the exception of a few classics that can overlap into both areas)

Useful tools for locating podcasts

I decided to search for podcasts that had book reviews. I don't read a lot of graphic novels and since I order for our Youth Service's collection it is important that I keep up with what is available. This particular site reviews a book a week...and they are not always new titles. This site also allows one to read through the archives, I think this is very nice feature.

You too can YouTube

Well, I must admit this was not my first time to check this site out. As far as my favorite video I selected my video!! :) I don't usually do things like willingly let someone with a camera film me with a silly costume on....but I like to try new things from time to time and this was fun. (and funny)

Discovering Web 2.0 Tools

WOW! There sure are a lot tools out there for us to utilize. Of course I have not had the time to check everything out but I did really like "Library Thing". You can search books, make a library of the books you have read, and get suggests using titles you enjoyed! And best of all it was really easy!

Zoho Writer

Zoho Writer is very cool! It is great for anyone who has the perfect paper saved (or any # of perfect “things”) and wants to keep it forever BUT doesn't want to constantly convert it when the program they used becomes out of date at the end of the week. Also, I think I will suggest it to some of our patrons who are working on their resumes. I know it can be used for many other things BUT I hear this one the most.

PBWiki

Okay so I have encountered some PB sandwiches that were harder. I plan to use my wiki as a quick and easy way to access things that I find while "surfing" at home when I get to work.

Library 2.0

Librarians not only need to be aware of the new technology available to the community but also should be using this technology to reach new people. As a librarian I do not feel like I am here for only serving one group of people but instead I am constantly trying to find ways to serve new people. One way to do this is by learning new forms of communication and then utilizing what I have learned. Library 2.0 means ensuring there will be a library for tomorrow.

Technorati

I checked out Technorati today. When searching for "learning 2.0" on this site I noticed there were some of the same entries found in "in tags" as were found in "Blog Director". Using the "in tags" pulled a few different items written by the same folks. Searching with "blog post" found completely different items. It was neat to read "What bloggers are saying right now". There was a cool feature at the bottom "Top Books".

Bloglines

So, I have been working on the 23 Things BUT I have forgotten to blog about each experience. It was super easy to make a "Bloglines" account and then it walks you through adding feeds. I added my ten (+) feeds many of those are folks from work but I did find some cool news feeds. Now I can quickly take a peek at what they are learning! ;)
